During 2014, there was again talk of replacing the historic Austin Avenue bridges with new structures. Resulting from a citizen initiative, Nore Winter was commissioned to make a study of the situation in the context of the Downtown Project and the Master Plan with its Design Guidelines.
This Design Evaluation was released by Winter & Company on December 2014 and presented to city council. The study champions the idea of building pedestrian bridges to accompany the historic bridges. In this way, the long-held dream becomes viable of connecting pedestrians from the downtown Square to Blue Hole, the River, the Park and the necklace of trails that lead all the way to Lake Georgetown.
